Review of Rad Power Bikes

Jeff Balton

RadPowerBikes Review

Rad Power Bikes, a Seattle-based company, makes different kinds of high-quality, yet affordable e-bicycles intended for city riding, off-roading, commuting, and even transporting cargo. They plan on making e-bikes available for everyone.

Ebikes are humanity’s best chance to replace gas-gobbling cars and work towards a greener planet. However, their price is a big hindrance. Most electric bikes cost upwards of $3,000, which is enough to buy a decent, used car as well.

Rad Power Bikes, a Seattle-based e-bike company, is trying to change that. They are focused on making accessible and practical everyday electric bikes that cost much less than the market average. To achieve that, they’re relying on some clever production and retail solutions.

If you’re in the market for an electric bicycle, our Rad Power Bikes review will tell you all you need to know about this affordable company, including an overview of the best models to consider.

A Brief History of Rad Power Bikes

Rad Power Bikes Founders

Ty Collins (left) and Mike Radenbaugh (right)

The first baby steps towards establishing Rad Power Bikes were made by Mike Radenbaugh in 2007. At the time, he was a high school student who needed an affordable way to commute to school every day. Therefore, he decided to build his first e-bike. That’s what everybody would do, right?

His first bike was made from very rustic components, including lead-acid batteries, a brushless motor, and Tupperware to encase the wiring. However, he was hooked and started making more e-bikes for his friends, family, and neighbors.

In 2015, he finally founded Rad Power Bikes by joining forces with Ty Collins, his childhood friend, and a fellow e-bike enthusiast.

Today, the company is a direct-to-consumer business with more than 160 employees and a lineup of 8 attractive electric bicycles.

Position in the Market: What Do They Offer?

Rad Power Bikes makes motor-assisted and battery-powered bicycles that are constantly developed and improved. Unlike many other companies out there that make both traditional and electric bikes, Rad Power Bikes puts all of their brains and manpower towards the electric market.

Rad Power Bikes is an e-bike-specific company focused on expanding the electric bicycle market and reaching a large number of customers around the world.

At the moment, they offer a total of 10 bikes, but the lineup is regularly updated. Their products are mostly built for commuting and mountain biking, but they are commonly used for leisure and fitness cycling as well.

Why Do Their Bikes Stand Out?

This Rad Power Bikes review will show you that their bikes are not your average ebike. They stand out from the pack by offering a plethora of unique features that cannot be found anywhere else. These bicycles are utilitarian in nature, which is what makes them competitive. But, there are other important aspects as well:

  • Direct-to-Consumer Business Model
  • Low Price
  • 750W Motor
  • Powerful Batteries
  • Extra Wide Tires
  • A Throttle
  • Practical Design

Rad Power Bikes makes bicycles and then sells them directly to cyclists, which is one way in which they are able to bring the price down. Another one is that they do not have exclusive partnership deals with big names in the industry, such as Shimano, Bosh, or Yamaha. Instead, they work with multiple vendors and build custom drivetrains.

The result is unique ebikes that cost $1,500 on average.

Overview Of Models

As we have previously mentioned, Rad Power Bikes has 8 models on offer at the moment. All of them are ebikes. The lineup includes cargo, folding, commuter, hybrid, fat, and mountain bikes. Therefore, there’s something for everyone.

There is also a choice of both step-over and step-through frames, which are ideal for older people to easily get on and start riding.

RadMission 1 – Electric Metro Bike

Single-Speed Commuter

RadMission

MSRP: $999

FULL REVIEW (With Video): RadMission 1

RadMission 1 is the cheapest and lightest electric bicycle that has left Rad Power Bikes’ production line so far. It’s a simple commuter made for dynamic city riders that need a two-wheeler that can keep up and get them from one place to another consistently.

  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Tire size: 27.5″ x 1.95″
  • Motor: 500W, 50 Nm of torque
  • Battery capacity: 48V, 10.5 Ah (504 Wh)
  • Components: Single-speed

Unlike other Rad Power Bikes, RadMission 1 is not necessarily built to haul weight. It’s an entry-level commuter intended as an introductory bike for anyone who is hesitant to take the plunge into the e-powered cycling world.

RadMission 1 is a single-speed electric bike built to mimic a fixie in both looks and utility. It’s a slick and stylish bicycle available in 5 colorways, two frame sizes, and two frame designs — step-over and step-through.

It comes equipped with front and rear (brake) lights for night riding, an easy-to-read LED display, mechanical disc brakes, and comfortable riser bars.

This model is $500 cheaper than the average Rad Power Bikes’ model and 15 lbs lighter. That makes it great for apartment dwellers who won’t struggle to carry it up a few flights of stairs.

Its tires are bigger and slimmer than ever before. RadMission 1 rolls on 27.5″ x 1.95″ tires which are ideal for speedy commutes on city streets.

Even though this model has a smaller battery and a weaker motor than the others, it easily maintains a 25 to 45+ mile range and pedal-assist or throttle support up to 20 mph.

If you need a cheap and easy-to-use electric bike for daily errands and commutes, RadMission 1 can handle any mission you place in front of it.

  • Tire size: 20″ x 3.3″
  • Motor: 750W, 80 Nm of torque
  • Battery capacity: 48V, 14 Ah (672 Wh)

RadRunner can best be described as a simple and fuss-free electric bicycle that can be as versatile as its owners need it to be.

It can serve as a daily commuter or it can be fitted with a plethora of accessories that will extend its functionality and give it much more carrying capacity than it originally has.

When it comes to the majority of components fitted on the RadRunner, it is pretty similar to all other bikes in Rad Power Bikes’ lineup. It has Tektro mechanical disc brakes, wide Kenda tires, a comfortable saddle, flat pedals, and an integrated rear rack.

However, this bike differs because it has no rear derailleur since it’s a single-speed. Therefore, bike maintenance is much easier. It also has no fenders, though these can be fitted later on.

Apart from fenders, you can also equip it with passenger saddles, a center console, front rack, baskets, panniers, or a child seat.

RadRover 5 – Electric Fat Bike (and Step-Through)

Electric Fat Bike

RadRover 5

MSRP: $1,699

FULL REVIEW: RadRover 5

Have you heard about the Land Rover SUV? Well, you’ll see that the RadRover 5 Electric Fat Bike has a lot in common with it. It offers unprecedented off-roading capabilities thanks to its 4″ wheels and a burly rear hub motor. It’s the best-selling electric fat bike in North America. It features a step-through version as well.

  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Tire size: 26″ x 4″
  • Motor: 750W, 80 Nm of torque
  • Battery capacity: 48V, 14 Ah (672 Wh)
  • Components: Shimano Acera

Fat bikes can go where no other type of bike can. However, they are usually very heavy, which deters a lot of potential riders. That’s not a problem when you have a 750W motor that can give you a push when you need it the most.

This bike is built around a 6061 aluminum frame and comes with a suspension fork that provides 80 mm of plush travel that will even out the terrain beneath you.

RadRover 5 comes with massive 26″ x 4″ Kenda Juggernaut tires which are knobby and impressive. They can go anywhere.

It also has a 1×7 drivetrain operated with a Shimano Acera rear derailleur. This is an entry-level groupset, but it’s more than enough for this bike. You will probably not abuse it thanks to the 750W motor with 80 Nm of torque. It will help you reach speeds of 20 mph.

If you are looking for a bicycle that you can ride no matter the weather, the season, or the terrain, then Rad Power Bikes’ RadRover 5 meets all of your needs.

This bike also comes with some extras included in the price. You will get a heavy-duty kickstand, front and rear fenders, as well as front and rear lights.

The speed and the remaining battery capacity are easy to read from the handlebar-mounted display, so you can plan your rides and routes accordingly.

It’s the best electric fat bike out there!

RadRover 6 Plus

All-New Electric Fat-Tire Bike

RadRover 6 PlusMSRP: $1,999

RadRover 5 was a huge success among outdoorsy Rad Power Bikes’ fans. The all-new and improved RadRover 6 Plus seems like a worthy heir to that fame.

The new model is built on the same platform, but it has better hydraulic disc brakes, a semi-integrated battery, a more intuitive user interface, and an updated geometry.

  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Tire size: 26″ x 4″
  • Motor: 750W, 80 Nm of torque
  • Battery capacity: 48V, 14 Ah (672 Wh)
  • Components: Shimano Altus

RadRover 5 is a very capable fat-tire e-bike, but it would struggle to keep up with RadRover 6 Plus. The latest model has the same 750W motor, but Rad Power Bikes’ engineers have tweaked it to deliver even more oomph and power, especially when climbing.

The 48V 14Ah 672Wh battery has undergone a complete revamp and now sits inside the downtube. Its semi-integrated design improves the appearance of the bicycle and protects the powerpack in case of a fall.

One of the most important improvements is the hydraulic disc brakes, which makes RadRover 6 Plus the first Rad Power Bikes model to boast this feature.

The braking is now easier, more powerful, and more precise than before.

Shorter riders will be happy to know that the company has also changed the geometry of this bike a bit. The head tube and the seat tubes are now shorter than before, which makes RadRover 6 suitable for riders with 25″ – 34″ long inseams.

We also love the new display and control unit as they are easier to use and look more modern than before. You can now track battery level, pedal-assist mode, wattage, speed, odometer, and time.

All other features you’re used to having on RadRover 5 are still here, such as a 7-speed drivetrain, 60mm front suspension, battery-powered lights, fenders, 26″ x 4″ tires, and a handy kickstand.

All of these improvements can be yours for a $300 upcharge compared to the previous model!

Rad Power Bikes’ RadMini 4 embodies two very popular trends in today’s cycling world — folding bikes and electric bikes. It is a small electric folding bike with 20″ wheels that packs ultra-small and can be easily taken on trains or stored away in a small nook in your home.

RadMini 4 is every commuter’s dream since you can combine a train ride with a bike trip that will not wear you down or leave you drenched in sweat before an important meeting.

RadMini 4 has a 6061 aluminum frame available in two versions: Step-over and step-through. Therefore, you can choose the one that fits your needs better.

It rolls on 3.3″ thick tires which are somewhere between a mountain bike and a fat bike. They’ll be extremely comfortable and provide plenty of grip. This bike also comes with Tektro mechanical disc brakes which won’t struggle to stop on a dime.

When you’re pedaling, you can rely on the 7 gears and the Shimano Altus drivetrain to get a good workout. As is the case with all Rad Power Bikes, this one also comes with lights, fenders, and a kickstand.

If you want a small foldable electric bike that can do the job of the big guys, RadMini 4 is on our recommended list.

RadCity 4 & RadCity Step-Thru 3

Best City E-Bike

RadCity 4 & RadCity Step-Thru 3

MSRP: $1,799

Full Review: RadCity

Last but not least in our Rad Power Bikes review is the RadCity 4 model. This is a hybrid/city bike ideal for modern urban cyclists, commuters, or fitness riders. Thanks to wide tires, this bike finds its place in off-road situations as well.

      • Frame material: Aluminum
      • Tire size: 26″ x 2.3″
      • Motor: 750W, 80 Nm of torque
      • Battery capacity: 48V, 14 Ah (672 Wh)
      • Components: Shimano Altus

Like some other models in this review, RadCity 4 is available with a step-over and a step-through frame. The step-through frame might be favored by female or elderly riders, but both are suitable for everyone.

It’s one of the fastest and best-looking bikes from Rad Power Bikes’ lineup, so let’s see what else it has to offer.

This is one of the most comfortable bikes Rad Power Bikes has on offer. The reason is the SR Suntour suspended fork with lockout and preload adjustment. It has 80 mm of travel which is more than enough for gravel and dirt roads, but some mild singletracks as well.

It rolls on Kenda K-Rad 26″ x 2.3″ tires and can develop speeds of up to 20 mph when the motor is on. Of course, you can go even faster than that, but you’ll have to use the power of your legs and the Shimano Altus 1×7 drivetrain.

RadCity 4 is ready to ride in all conditions thanks to front and rear fenders, a rear rack, and front and rear lights.

The list of specs and features makes this bike the perfect marriage between urban and off-road riding, as well as between style and practicality.

The newest iteration of RadCity has a lot in common with the previous models but sports numerous improvements. It’s available with a step-over and a step-through aluminum frame that makes it suitable for riders with 24″ to 34″ inseams.

The 750W brushless geared rear hub motor has also been revamped, so expect 40% more power and higher speeds when climbing steep hills.

Another big improvement is the hydraulic disc brakes, giving you a lot more stopping power and better control of your braking. The drivetrain is unchanged—the tried and tested Shimano Altus groupset providing you with 7 wide-range gears.

RadCity 5 Plus offers loads of value to any urban commuter thanks to an improved range, a more powerful motor, better brakes, and a stable and modern-looking frame.

Electric Bikes Are Booming Worldwide!

Just a decade ago, e-bikes were considered to be another one of the passing cycling fads that come and go in a short period of time.

However, it is now more than obvious that electric bicycles are here to stay. That is why their electric bikes are extremely popular and competitive on the cycling market.

Other manufacturers are getting on the bandwagon as well. Rob Roskopp, one of the founders of Santa Cruz bikes, said in a Pinkbike interview that he believes in five years, 50% of the models in Santa Cruz’s catalog will have a motor in them. That’s huge.

Therefore, Rad Power Bikes are a great choice for anyone who wants to make their commute to work or school easier, continue riding past old age, or overcome pesky injuries.

They’re also a great choice for those who want an e-bike, but do not want to break the bank by shelling out $4,000 and then eating noodles three times a day for the rest of the year.

  • To tell the truth, I have only known about e-scooters and used it. I could move through the city without problems and without spending money on gasoline. Now I am amazed by the fact that you can not only go by e-scooter, but also by e-bike. What is most wonderful is that Rad Power Bikes company is going to make e-bikes available for any person. I think it is really important because such innovations, as a rule, are expensive enough and not everyone can afford it. This fact will definitely increase the demand for the Rad Power Bikes’s products. Also, it is so cool the customer has a wide selection because there are such various multifunctional kinds of e-bikes. My favorite one is “RadRunner” . It won my heart because it can be versatile and can adapt to me. Likewise, I can’t believe that it is so cheap. After reading this article, I realized that I need to purchase an e-bike.

  • Richard Lee says:

How do you recharge the battery? Is there a custom cable for that? Since the battery is removable, can I take just it — rather than the entire bike — inside to recharge?

  • Dave Yang says:

Beware of poor customer service. I was in Seattle and dropped by the store to get dimensions of the folded up ebike to see if it would fit in my cover secured pick up truck bed. The employee did not have the information, and would not measure one inside the store for me and kept referring me to their web site, which did not have the information. Even though he was the only person in the store he would to let me in without an online appointment.

So, if you ever have problems with your Rad eBike what kind of customer service will you get? Online sales, unfortunately, breeds this type of attitude.

  • Dave Yang says:

Many good comments from owners of Rad eBikes. I never bought one because of the poor attitude of the Rad person at their store in Seattle. I wanted a step through fold up version, but my main concern were the “folded up” dimensions so I could determine if they fit in the cover secured bed of my pick up truck. Couldn’t find the information at the Rad website, but was driving to Seattle so I stopped by their store. One employee who came out ……. would not let me in the store without an appointment even though no one one else was in the store at the moment. Could not tell me the dimensions and kept referring me to the web site. Never offered to go back in and measure and then give me the folded up dimensions.

So, my comment is ….. be aware that online sales breeds this kind of “bad” customer service attitude, so if you ever have problems with your Rad eBike ….. whom will you get and what kind of customer service, or lack of customer service, might you get?
