Schwinn is one of the oldest bicycle manufacturers still up and running. But are Schwinn bikes still good? Check out our detailed Schwinn bikes review below to find out.

Schwinn is an iconic USA-based cycling brand with a long tradition of making excellent bicycles.

However, many were left wondering if Schwinn bikes are still worth the money after the company was sold off to Pacific Cycle in 2001.

If you are a beginner or a casual cyclist, Schwinn is still worth your attention. That’s why we’re writing this detailed Schwinn Bikes review to show you the brand’s lineup and tell you about its rich history.

Take a look at our guide below!

History of Schwinn Bikes

Schwinn Bikes was founded back in 1895 in Chicago by a German-born mechanical engineer called Ignaz Schwinn. Schwinn review

Learn more: History of Bicycles

It didn’t take long for Schwinn to become the biggest bicycle manufacturer in the USA and retain that status for the better part of the 20th century.

However, due to heavy competition in the 1990s, Schwinn’s sales dropped and the company was forced to declare bankruptcy.

Pacific Cycle bought what was left of this iconic American brand and started selling Schwinn models as “box store” bikes at Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us.

Modern Schwinn bicycles may not have the same reputation as old Schwinn bikes, but that is slowly beginning to change.

In addition to “department store” models, the company also makes higher-end bikes known as the Signature Series. These include road, mountain, hybrid, cruiser, urban, electric, and kids bicycles that can be found on Schwinn’s website.

Schwinn Electric Bikes

Coston

Schwinn Coston E-bikes

  • 250W brushless rear hub motor
  • Bright lights
  • 2.6″ tires and mechanical disc brakes

Schwinn Coston is a lineup of four good-looking e-bikes that can serve different purposes. They offer excellent components and come at an accessible price.

The series consists of two models—Coston CE and Coston DX—plus step-over and step-through versions of those bikes—four bicycles in total.

Schwinn Coston e-bikes are built around a lightweight aluminum frame with (CE) or without (DX) front suspension. Depending on which model you choose, the frame will also come with (DX) or without (CE) a rear rack for easier cargo hauling.

Schwinn Coston bikes are pretty similar, but they do have some important differences. Coston CE models are more suitable for all-road and off-road riding, whereas Coston DX models are better suited for commuting on paved and gravel roads.

All four models are powered by a 250W rear hub motor that will assist you up to 20 mph with PAS or throttle. The Coston CE builds come with a 288 Wh battery and a 35-mile range, whereas the Coston DX builds boast 360 Wh of capacity and a 45-mile range. It’s up to you to decide which model suits your needs better.

On the other hand, Schwinn equipped all Coston e-bikes with fenders, bright lights, a 7-speed drivetrain, and mechanical disc brakes. An additional feature you will get with DX models is under-seat storage that is great to carry keys, wallet, or your phone.

Get them if you’re looking for attractive hybrid electric bikes that combine practicality and comfort on paved and unpaved roads.

Marshal

Schwinn Marshal E-Bikes

  • 250W brushless geared rear hub motor
  • 288 Wh battery (35-mile range)
  • Disc brakes and suspension fork

The Marshal is a more affordable hybrid Schwinn electric bike suitable for commuters and casual riders who need some assistance. It’s available with a step-over and a step-through aluminum frame.

It’s powered by a 250W brushless rear hub motor that offers multiple levels of pedal assist and throttle that will help you climb hills faster. The battery is integrated into the down tube and offers 35 miles of range with a 288Wh capacity. Nothing impressive, but not bad either.

The lightweight aluminum frame is combined with a Hi-Ten steel fork with 100mm of travel for utmost comfort on bumpy roads. You’ll also get a 7-speed Microshift drivetrain that will allow you to keep pedaling without much effort.

Disc brakes and a comfy saddle also enter the $1,500 price tag, which is a pleasant surprise. Though Schwinn also equipped Marshal with bright lights and 2.3″ wide tires that are suitable for all types of roads, including light trails.

So if you want an affordable but powerful Schwinn electric bike to ride to work, to school, around the neighborhood, or on bike paths, the Marshal is all you really need.

Mendocino

Schwinn Mendocino

  • Comfortable cruiser geometry
  • Mechanical disc brakes
  • 20MPH assist & 45-mile range

Schwinn Mendocino is an excellent cruiser-style e-bike intended for riders who cycle in order to get from one place to another or to explore the neighborhood and have fun. If you’re looking for a fitness e-bike, Coston and Marshal are much better choices.

That said, Mendocino sports a 6061 step-through aluminum frame with a rigid fork and rolls on versatile 26″ wheels and tires. That makes it suitable for ladies, older people, and shorter riders.

In terms of electric components, Mendocino is powered by a 250W rear hub motor and a 313Wh battery mounted on the rear rack. Together, they ensure assistance (PAS & Throttle) up to 20 mph and a 45-mile range per charge. That’s pretty good for a cruiser bike that costs $1,700.

A few other notable features include powerful mechanical disc brakes and a Shimano Tourney 6-speed rear derailleur. This means you can confidently climb and descend hills, so no commute is out of the question.

Finally, you can mount panniers on the rear rack to carry groceries or other necessities and front and rear fenders will protect your favorite outfit from water and grit on wet days.

With all of this in mind, we recommend Schwinn Mendocino to anyone who’s looking for a comfortable and relaxed cruiser e-bike to commute every day or ride every now and then on weekends.

High Timber

High Timber

The High Timber Schwinn mountain bike also features 21 gears with Shimano components and an aluminum frame with relaxed upright geometry.

However, the highlight on the list of specs is the disc brakes. Though these are mechanical disc brakes, they offer superior stopping power compared to rim brakes.

Traxion

Schwinn Traxion

  • Full-suspension aluminum frame
  • 24 gears
  • Mechanical disc brakes

We don’t often recommend cheap full-suspension bikes because manufacturers often take shortcuts to be able to make both front and rear suspension fit the price.

However, Schwinn Traxion is a solid FS bike if you maintain realistic expectations about what it can and can’t do. The fork and rear shock will not survive abuse on extreme trails, but they’ll get the job done on dirt and gravel roads and moderate trails.

Traxion also has 24 gears with a Shimano rear derailleur and capable 29 x 2.25″ knobby tires. Of course, mechanical disc brakes come with the package as well, so you can both climb and descend confidently.

This bike is made around a lightweight and strong aluminum frame that doesn’t feature internal cable routing, which is one of the main downsides.

Get this Schwinn mountain bike if you want the highest level of comfort without paying the highest price!

Schwinn Scooters

In addition to different types of bicycles, Schwinn also sells adult scooters. These are available with or without an electric motor and battery, depending on your needs.

Adult scooters have been rising in popularity recently, especially in urban areas, as they’re perfect for short commutes.

Electric

The electric models fold down, so you can easily bring them inside the building once you reach your destination, or store them in a corner of your home.

At the moment, Schwinn manufactures three models of electric scooters, called Tone 1, Tone 2, and Tone 3. They have a 15 mph maximum speed and up to 11 miles of range. They’re also ideal if you’re taking public transport but need to walk a part of your commute.

Non-Electric

If you don’t need electric assistance, you can opt for one of two non-electric Schwinn scooters that resemble a bicycle with a platform between the wheels.

This is a fun way to commute that combines a 26″ front wheel with a 20″ rear wheel and comes with front and rear disc brakes and even a basket to carry stuff.

If you live in a city with a good network of cycle lanes or streets that are not too busy, Schwinn scooters could prove to be a practical and fun way to reach more places faster.

Where to Buy?

Schwinn bikes are available online, in retail stores in the USA, and in Schwinn bike shops in other countries around the world.

Online, you can purchase Schwinn bikes directly from Schwinn on the official website (schwinnbikes.com) or on Amazon, where there’s also a huge selection of models from different categories.

If you’d like to see or try the bike in person, you can do that at Target or Walmart. Keep in mind that these stores typically stock entry-level models, so if you want something with better specs, you should shop online.

Schwinn Serial Numbers

Every Schwinn bicycle comes with a serial number imprinted on the frame. This allows you to search Schwinn bike models by years and find out what month and year your Schwinn bike was manufactured.

There is quite a big amount of vintage Schwinn bikes circulating around, so it’s always worth checking.

Schwinn serial numbers are typically found under the bottom bracket, but on some models they can also be located on the headtube or on the rear dropouts.

If you’re interested in old Schwinn bikes, this is a great way to learn more about a particular model by searching through old catalogs, advertisements, and Schwinn documentation available online.

FAQ

Schwinn bikes are definitely not what they used to be, but they’re still worth the money. Nowadays, Schwinn makes entry-level bikes that don’t cost much which makes them ideal for beginners and casual riders. They’re made with quality affordable materials that will last if taken good care of.

Actually, Schwinn bikes are not expensive at all. Schwinn mostly makes entry-level bikes that cost little but offer decent features for beginners and casual riders. They might be slightly more expensive than similar models because Schwinn is a popular brand, but they’re still quite affordable.

Schwinn is a great brand for beginners and amateur hobby riders. Sadly, most Schwinn bikes are no longer suitable for more serious riders because they’re made with entry-level components that limit performance. If you’re a casual rider, though, you’ll be more than happy with any Schwinn bike.

Both Trek and Schwinn make good bicycles, but they’re suitable for different types of riders. If you are a serious fitness rider or you aspire to race, get a Trek model. If you are a casual rider who just enjoys cycling, Schwinn will do the job at a low price.

Schwinn and Huffy bikes are comparable in terms of components, the materials used, and the overall build. However, in our opinion, Schwinn bikes are slightly better because they’re made by a company with a long tradition. They might be more expensive, but they’ll also last for much longer.

To find out how old a Schwinn bike is, you should first find the bike’s serial number. It is typically located under the bottom bracket, on the chain-side dropout, or on the head tube. Once you obtain the serial number, you can visit the Schwinn Date Code website and learn more about your bike.

The price of an old Schwinn bicycle depends on how rare the model is and how well preserved it is. For example, a beat-up Schwinn bike that requires extensive restoration can only be worth $50. But a rare model in good condition, such as the 1920 Schwinn Excelsior, can retail for as much as $1,000.

Our Thoughts

Are Schwinn bikes still worth your money? Our answer is a definite Yes.

But are Schwinn bikes the same quality as they used to be? Most of them aren’t, though the brand still makes some higher-end bikes introduced through the Signature Series lineup.

  1. I have been in the bicycle business for over 40 years. Over half of those were at Schwinn dealerships. When Schwinn went bankrupt and was sold I owned and still own my own store. I totally disagree with you. Schwinn us only a name now. A commodity. It is no where near the quality it was. I regularly rebuild and resell 40 year old Schwinn bikes. I regularly junk out what we refer to as Nottaschwinns. I work on the big box Schwinn junk all the time. These are not quality bikes. You state a higher end bike is available on line. Sure. Then take it to a bike store and have it assembled for a fee. Then you’re on your own for warranty work. The assembling shop isn’t going to be on the hook for warranty.
Please do yourself and independent dealers a favor. Buy a t your local independent bike dealer. They have something QUALITY to fit your your budget and they will handle any issues. Circumvent the bike shop and they will disappear. Then where do you go for advice, parts and repairs.

  2. Come on man. No mention of the Axum, Taff, Alum Comp or Boundary. All these mountain bikes have updated geometry and specs that rival and surpass most lbs bikes in price and features. All can be found on Walmart and are covered under warranty by Pacific Bikes as well.

    1. Hi David, thank you for commenting! We reviewed all of the bikes that were available on Schwinn’s website a the time of writing this article. We’ll consider updating it with the new models. Cheers!

  3. I bought a Schwinn Meridian tricycle in March. It is great. Very sturdy and well balanced.
I am elderly an can’t walk far. Last year I bought a tricycle that almost killed me. It tipped over was just a little off balance. One time it tipped over and I hit my head so hard on the pavement that it cracked my helmet. I decided then I was getting a Schwinn. I got it and have ridden every day since I got it and have no issues.
I would recommend this tricycle to anyone wanting to get out and ride. It is great

  4. I will never again nor will I ever suggest anyone by a Schwinn bike they do not stand behind their guarantee nowhere to guarantee that’s to say that I have to go get the bike fixed when they send me the parts it says satisfaction guaranteed if I’m not I’m not satisfied the guarantee is only convenient for them

    1. Hi Duane,
Sorry to hear about your experience. Can you elaborate the nature of your experience with the bike? Did you deal with missing parts? Defects etc?

  5. I own a Traxion, and the gears are a bit weird and the bike skips seventh gear but other than that the bike is amazing, I live in Albuquerque New Mexico and I go mountain biking on the Sandias with it and it does well on the trails.

  6. I have a schwinn super sport in pretty good condition. Some rust on the gears but not severe. I was told it’s a collectors item. I would love to sell it to someone who would love and appreciate it as I have over the years. Any suggestions on how I would find that special person. And what would be a reasonable price to ask for it?

  7. I got an old bicycle from a friend it is in very good condition and I can ride it safe. It feels very comfortable
